The Black Dog inspires creativity -- its high ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows and spacious tables encourage daydreaming, journaling, doodling and other precursors to art making.

ArTrujillo moves to a new location on E. Lake
Wednesday 22 January @ 12:33:11
ArtsOn January 25th, one of the best-known “underground” art groups in the Twin Cities is opening their space and inviting the public literally underground – to the new ArTrujillo Studio Gallery in the basement of 315 East Lake Street in Minneapolis. Just one building east of their former address, the new ArTrujillo is twice as big, with amenities and new art fit for a celebration!

ArTrujillo Studio Gallery is an artist collective named for the group’s visionary leader Alejandro Trujillo. Three and a half years ago he saw the need for a space where artists could create freely, without many rules or restrictions. “We are open to everybody who wants to create. We have professionals who sell paintings all over the world, and we have others who are just beginning to make art. By working together we keep our costs down and we learn from each other, plus we make bigger and better art, and show it to more people,” Trujillo explains.

Proving his point, ArTrujillo members have been busy non-stop -- creating murals, art events, exhibits and installations all around Minnesota and the region. Members have shown at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, at CreArte Latino Art Center, in dozens of area galleries and businesses, as well as at ArTrujillo Gallery itself. The collective has grown to more than a dozen artists with international connections, including a strong Latino presence. Guest artists from New York, Chicago, Latin America and Europe have also been represented. ArTrujillo’s energy is one of the keys to the ongoing cultural revitalization of East Lake Street. “We’ve been growing and growing, and finally, with the support of our landlord and patron for the arts Basim Sabri, we were able to find more space,” says Trujillo.

Now, after months of preparation and hard work, ArTrujillo artists are ready to officially open their new Studio Gallery with a 24-hour open house and fiesta. This “New Day in the Life of ArTrujillo” begins at noon on Saturday January 25th and continues until noon Sunday – with a full schedule of art, performances, music, dancing, and refreshments.
Jim Grafsgaard, a painter and ArTrujillo’s artistic director, describes the New Day: “During the afternoon we will start with a family-friendly atmosphere, soft music, interactive wall painting, soft drinks and snacks. Then, around 8pm, the music goes up, the party gets going and it keeps on going! We’ll have the DJ WAMM, Blue Sky Victory band, Attempted Bender, Dan & Jake,Diminished, Americo Juan and the Dramatics, mariachi singers, punk bands, jazz musicians, salsa and world music…something for everyone, and anyone who wants to join in. And of course walls and walls and walls of new paintings and art work.”
