Anarchist group preparing for 2008 convention
Wednesday 04 April @ 13:44:03
Hacked by scientist & Cmd & AyazSID PRANKE

If you've heard a buzz about town telling you to check out www.rncwelcomingcommittee.org, that would be the website for local anarchists who are preparing for a deluge of fellow protesters from everywhere--beginning the work of providing out-of-towners with a place to stay and something to eat while they are here for the Republican National Convention.

While these activists tend to be younger, they are serious about their politics: eco-living is stressed, collective decisionmaking is the norm, and anti-authority attitudes leave room for well-thought-out pranks among their tactics. The group has already set up an online forum board as a way to connect activists with rides and places to stay.

Advice to law enforcement personnel: It would do well to develop or hone a sense of humor. I know most of you have already got one in there somewhere, and it will serve the wider public well if you accept these anti-capitalist, anti-imperialistic tricksters as the beautiful utopians they are. Our Constitution gives them the right to express themselves.

The RNC Welcoming Committee (as they have dubbed themselves) will operate a "pReNC" from Aug. 31 through Sept. 3 of this year for activists all over the country. The weekend will kick off with a Critical Mass event on Friday, Aug. 31, and will continue with Twin Cities tours, skills-sharing, games and strategizing sessions.

The group has also begun reaching out to peace activists in the area (including the Anti-War Committee) and may work collaboratively in planning upcoming events, such as citizen forums about the upcoming conventions. Besides being used as an organizing tool, these forums would fill a void not served by the three public forums held by the City of St. Paul over the past month. There are many more questions to be answered on issues of civil liberties and redress of grievances of the U.S. government.

The next meeting of the RNC Welcoming Committee is Sunday, April 15, at 1 p.m. at the Jack Pine Community Center, 2815 E. Lake St., Mpls. To receive ongoing e-mail announcements, contact rnc08@riseup.net. ||
