Earl Root raps about the bands playing ROAE's 666teenth Anniversary Bash
Aesma Daeva “If you took the best of progressive rock music from the ’70s and ’80s, like Yes, Rush, Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Dream Theatre, Led Zeppelin, sex rock, it all goes with that, and classical music—opera, female operatic voice—and heavy metal. Mix all of them together and what do you get? Aesma Daeva. I perform all the heavy metal and heavy mental antics. Melissa sings and John does the keyboards. It’s all about the show, man, there’s nothing better than sitting there watching a crowd sing along with a song you wrote—it’s better than sex with the three most gorgeous people you’ve ever met in your life.”
Zebulon Pike
“They feature Eric Kraske from Happy Apple. Beautiful. It’s huge. Super exploratory rock, really heavy stoner metal, it’s wonderful shit. They’re a great, heavy band. I love ‘em.”
Cold Colours “They have ex-members of a band called Wolfthorn, and Brian Huebner also started Left Alone Creations with me that helped launch the label. Jon Rayl, who wasn’t on the record, plays keyboards for them, and he’s also one of the players in Impaler’s live show, and he also works at Guitar Center. Jon is a GREAT guy. So we have a connection. They’re opening the show.”
Demonicon “They’re probably technical cruelty at its best. It’s technical death metal with a heavy, heavy groove. I mean, they rock really hard. If you notice, every single one of these bands rock. They all rock! Demonicon remember what it was like to have the groove in heavy metal. The new Demonicion is coming out before Metal Fest, they’re playing there. The new stuff is even catchier than the last.”
Gee As In Jesus “In that twisted, psychotic, hillbilly nonsense that they play...where the harmonies are just slightly off but enough to make it so anybody can sing along. It’s very catchy, and it’s very easy to learn, and you like it so much that you wanna play it again. I catch myself playing their songs over, and over, and over. What’s the best way to get at the people you want most, other than proliferating their lifestyle? It’s such a beautiful thing! The psychotic hillbillies from hell, they have the message to share with the people, and they will scare the hell outta the goth boys, and they will make the satyrs laugh. They came up from Indiana and played with us and Impaler awhile back at the Entry, and they were the shit. I was having fun and so was the crowd. I just thought, I need to sign these guys immediately! Gee As In Jesus is fucking beautiful, dude. The shit is just so perfect, it’s sick as hell, sick as hell.”
god-awful “god: A being conceived of possessing divine power, and therefore to be propiated by sacrifice, worship, and the like. A thing exalted too much in estimation, or deified and honored as the chief sovereign of the universe. awful: Striking or inspiring with awe, filling with dread, or dread mingled with profound reverence and excessive terror; proceeding from awe; extrordinary or highly remarkable. God-awful is fucking metal that fucking rocks! The late ’80s and early ’90s brought some of the best classic metal to ever be created. It was in this “heyday” that the founders of god-awful met and formulated what was later to become their course in this history. Under legal advisment and obligations, the name of that entity created must remain nameless. The concentration and focal point must be moved towards today and the band god-awful. Combining all that is metal with a blend of old school thrash, speed and death with today’s more melodic thrash, to heavy groove- laden riffs and beyond. Not relying on any given genre to create a ‘super alloy’ of all things metal. God-awful is a metal band, plain and simple. Just fucking METAL.”
Havochate “They’re from New York, features Freddy on guitar, and he’s a fucking amazing guitar player. Shred is not dead! He fucking shreds up a guitar. Three years ago, I saw these guys at the New Jersey Metal Fest, and I got their demo, which I thought was fantastic. I talked to them about a deal, they didn’t have a lot of money, but they liked what I was doing, trying to be an upfront and honest guy. It took me about three years to sign ‘em. They came up to me at the last Metal Fest and said they wanted to sign with me. And I was like, no prob, I’ll make you my number one priority. It was nice, and we’re like brothers. I feel like I’ve known ‘em for years, even though they’ve only been signed to my label for nine months. Their record is about to come out. Fans can buy all of these records at the show, they can buy ‘em on the Web site, http://www.rootofallevil.com.”
Impaler
“How do I explain Impaler to somebody?(Tom interjects—“I can! The Ramones meet a Southern death cult blasting Black Sabbath Vol. 4 in their truck, and proceed to melt like yer peanut butter in my chocolate. Cool baby sinners!) I met Bill Lindsey when we were both boys. I saw him at the Medina or somewhere, he couldn’t get out of the cage they’d built for him, it was quite a show. I’ve been friends with Bill ever since. I love and respect the man, it’s a very good thing. I love Impaler, I just wish more people would love them too. How beautiful is it that Gee As In Jesus comes up right after Impaler? Here’s the ghouls, and there’s the psychotic hillbillies from hell...”
Salubrious Invertabrae “Ralph—the man behind Salubrious Invertebrae—which actually means, ‘fat worm,’ was actually the best man at my wedding. That record is so metal, it’s on my top ten list of all-time great metal albums. I went over to his house, checked out his stereo, and it’s the best fucking stereo I’ve seen in my entire life. I’m like, yeah! We were trying to find a cool name, and he wanted to name it Sky Whale. I was like, ‘No dude, no! It has to be something that’s bloated, because your music is extremely bloated.’ In that genre, he rocks extremely hard. He’s last on the bill, because he can play forever, he’ll want to play for a long, long time. Tangerine Dream, Brian Eno and Klaus Schultz figure as major musical influences. Unlike much of the ambient material of the ’90s and the 21st Century, there are no MIDI controls so as to avoid any possibility of the Giant Karaoke Machine on stage. In other words, Ralph plays all the instruments on the record, and we lend a hand onstage live. “
Teratism “The harshest black metal that you’ve ever heard in your life. This stuff is insane. Seriously satantic rock, man. Incredibly brutal! I think the song “Hate” is my favorite. Unbelievable! They call the drummer “Machine” and you’ll know why when you hear him. It’s unbelievable. It’s relentless, never lets up, never gets off that high-octane thing. They absolutely kill. Members of the band Theatre of The Macabre, which is an earlier release I put out, make up Teratism. They’re the offspring of TOTM. Two really big bands on my label.”
Earl On The Entry Bands:
Nymphotomy “Incredible, brutal death-grind metal, female fronted. Huge supporters of the scene. Ben is so good, it’s amazing.”
Quincy Punx
“Quintessential, classic Twin Cities punk rock. They just reformed for a couple shows, and it’s gonna be awesome. Those guys have all been friends of mine for years, and I love ‘em.”
Epicurean “The keyboardist from this band used to be in Lord Of All Desires, a record I put out on my label years before. They’re phenomenal—progressive, black, Swedish thrash. It’s like black metal mixed with Swedish thrash and keyboards. It’s wonderful, they’re very good musicians, very tight, I’m glad they’re back.”
Anal Blast “Anal Blast is by far the most brutal porno grind music that I’ve ever heard. For some reason, they are enthralled by women’s menstrual cycles. I do not know why, but for some reason, they are extremely entertaining. It’s twisted, but really fucking heavy. I’ve known Dekker for years. The stories I could tell are numerous and exhausting. I will leave you with this—the huge controversy that’s between us is such a beautiful farce, and I love it to death. Because people think we hate each other as much as it looks, but we don’t. Jesus loves you just as much as Satan.”
Skrum “The singer of Skrum was originally the singer of Opaque, which is another band I put out on my label, a hardcore metal thing. They all split up, or they’d be there. But I’ve got the singer, two of the people who used to play in Avalanche, and one of the guitar players is also in Crepitus.”
The Bloodshot “Andy is a huge supporter of the scene. He’s so into the fucking real deal, the music, what makes the scene pulse. He loves the feeling of aggression and the whole aliveness of the live experience, which is exactly where I’m at. And he’s so young, but I’ve known him for years. He’s a really cool dude and his band rocks really fucking hard. I’d love to put out a record from that band.”
Apostle Thirteen “They used to be Porcelain God, I’ve had them on a couple of samplers. Now they have a new drummer and call themselves AT.”
Ripsnorter “The band Ripsnorter cannot make our showcase...so we are replacing them with members of Ripsnorter’s other band and members of 21st Century Sin (now defunct but still on one of the first ROOT OF ALL EVIL compilations), a lineup called Tempestuous. They will kick some serious ass!”
