Letters to the EditorIsraelis are stealing Palestinian Land

Erica Bouza’s letter to Senator Coleman 4-9-03

Israelis are stealing Palestinian Land

The stunning proof of what Israel’s campaign has always been about, the irreversible theft of Palestinian lands beginning in 1948 and destruction of Palestinian civil life, reveals itself in the orgy of wanton killing, humiliation, depredation, vandalism of everthing Palestinian. By what human calculus does the IDF besiege refugee camps of shacks and engage in frenzied campaigns of killings and liquidation at the rate of 12 to 20 people a week and call such activities retaliation to terrorist violence and a threat to Israel’s survival? The surreal Palestinian reality is that life and death have become synonymous; that a people should endure such unremitting cruelty and still not give up is itself a collective miracle.

In the context of disparity of power, it seems deranged to keep asking Palestinians, who have no defenses of any kind, to renounce violence.

Palestinians behave as all hopelessly colonized people in history have behaved; they rebel in protest. What is so difficult about that and why do Israelis resist understanding the most elementary aspects of human behavior? Suicide bombings cannot be examined from a viewpoint that permits a hidden racist standard to value innocent Jewish lives more than innocent Palestinian lives. What does it suggest to believe that pure punitive sadism will actually improve relationships between peoples? Israel cannot forever remain above the standards applied to other nations and hide, neurotically, behind the claim that opposition is motivated by hatred of Jews and never by its own barbaric actions.

RE: Erica Bouza’s letter to Senator Coleman 4-9-03

1. If you can afford to take a foreign vacation you certainly can afford to buy your own gas mask so the Senate will have 101 people to govern.

2. You cannot have liberty without safety. Just how much liberty would those killed by terrorists have sacrificed for safety? We live in a real world. A world where a large percentage of Muslims will continue to kill us if we ignore safety for the concept of political correctness.

3. An awful lot of us believe the McCarthy period we are heading for is Eugene.
