Chris Riemenschneider’s piece in the Star Tribune on 3/5 defending cigarette smoking in clubs was incredibly irresponsible. One would almost think he’s in league with big tobacco since he’s singing their song. Tobacco companies try to link rock and roll and good times with cigarette smoking.
Music loving adolescents, teens, tweens and up read Riemenschneider’s column to find out what’s cool and happening. Now, thanks to Chris, they can continue to smoke or even worse, resume or start smoking. George Harrison, Eddie Kendricks (The Temptations), and Mary Wells (one of Motown’s best) died from smoking cigarettes. Eddie Van Halen has tongue cancer from cigarettes. How cool do you think that is? Vic Chesnutt, Haley Bonar and Brenda Weiler requested smoke free shows at local venues, and the shows were packed, and the crowd didn’t feel at all ‘stiffer than the corpse of the Marlboro Man’.
