Art Attack powers activate: form a sculpture

Got big plans for this weekend? Well, make sure they include spending at least a few hours at Art Attack in Northeast Minneapolis. Now in its ninth year, Art Attack takes place in the Northrup King building and features more than 150 local artists who will open their studios to the public who can view and purchase their work.
Touting itself as “four city blocks of studios under one roof with abundant free parking,” Art Attack is a cool, giant art mall with every artistic medium as well as demonstrations, tasty victuals and live music.
One of the highlights of this year’s Art Attack is the Third Annual Northeast Sculptural invitational exhibition, which is coordinated by prolific local sculptor Foster Willey. In this show, professional and emerging artists display sculptural diversity. Various methods are represented, including several figurative sculpture approaches, abstract and kinetic sculpture, fiber, found object pieces and two-dimensional works that complement the sculptures.
Sculptor Randy Walker (see Pulse, July 20) is an architect who uses fiber and found objects to create geometric sculptures. Meanwhile, accomplished sculptor Foster Willey is well known in the public art sector as a bronze, steel, concrete and stone sculptor. “My interest in the figurative tradition, classical form and architectural ornament are central to my creative efforts,” says Willey.
James Church creates bronze figures using a “lost wax method.” As an artist, he says his goal is to “represent the reality of the world around me through analogy, metaphor and perspiration. The process I use is … an analogy for overcoming material limitations, for transforming.”
Painter and sculptor Kristie Bretzke incorporates psychological and quirky facets into the portraits she creates that “accentuate unique characteristics.” Her paintings will be on display during the show, as well as wood block prints by Eric Skoglund.
Ten distinct sculptors will have 30 pieces of their work on display this weekend in gallery 322 at NKB. The exhibit will also include the funky stylings of Kyle Fokken (see Pulse, May 3), Nick Legeros, Sonja Olson, Jack Pavlik and Gene Piersa. Each artist was selected for this show because of the talent and distinct approach his or her work brings to the exhibit.
Art Attack promises to be fun for all, and a great time to think about getting your holiday shopping done early. Oh, and don't forget to pick up something for yourself—after all, you can never have too much art! Art Attack runs Nov. 3-5. Hours are Fri. 5:30-9:30 p.m.; Sat. noon–5 p.m. & Sun. noon–4 p.m. The opening reception for the Sculpture Invitational is Fri. Nov. 3, 5:30–9:30 p.m. Northrup King Building is located at 1500 Jackson St. NE, Mpls. 612-363-5612 or northrupkingbulding.com.
