Summer of Love

June 28 at The Turf Club | 9 p.m | $5 | 21+ | ~DWIGHT HOBBES Once upon a time (1967, actually), even before Woodstock, there was something called The Monterey International Pop Festival, boys and girls. It was the first of its kind, a giant event full of rock stars. And it showcased some of the most interesting music imaginable-–The Jimi Hendrix Experience in their American debut as well running the gamut, from soul (Otis Redding) to jazz (Laura Nyro, Lou Rawls) to you-name-it (Ravi Shankar). With, of course, most of the acts being architects of the fabled San Francisco sound, including The Airplane, The Dead and Big Brother and the Holding Company. Monterey highlighted what would come to be called the “Summer Of Love,” and anytime you hear The Airplane’s “Somebody To Love” or Big Brother’s “Summertime,” that’s the summer you’re put in mind of (rather your parents, at least).
Return to (or visit) those days of yesteryear with a tribute to that era by The Hypstrz, The Floorshakers, The Autumn Leaves and The Conquerors. FYI: Tommy Rey of The Mighty Mofos (they’re not playing) got the idea. “I was thinking of my beloved ’60s and realized it was the 40-year anniversary of the “Summer Of Love.” Probably ’66 to ’68 was one of the most important [times] of rock & roll.” Well, it definitely was a boatload of freewheeling, resin-caked fun (hence the quip—“Anyone who remembers the ’60s wasn’t there.”) Enjoy the soundtrack. 9 p.m., $5. The Turf Club, 1601 University Ave W., St Paul. 651 647-0486.
