What follows is an interview profile of Jennifer Davis. Get into the mind of a local artist:
“I grew up in Plymouth, MN, west of Minneapolis. I have always like to make art but started to get really into it after taking a few drawing classes in college. I graduated from the U in 1998. I love Richard Diebenkorn, Egon Schiele, Francis Bacon...so many. I am most inspired by my fellow MN artists—there is so much great art being produced right here/now in the Twin Cities. I LOVE Rosalux.
After graduating from college and working alone for a while, I started to feel pretty isolated. I joined because I admired the idea of a cooperative gallery. I am honored to work with such an energetic, devoted and talented group of people. I'm not just saying that- Rosalux is good people. I am also involved with SCAN, the Seward Community Arts Network. I am co-coordinating this year’s Seward Arts Festival with another SCAN member, Jocinda Gaynor. We are planning performances, an art crawl, etc. for the November 13th event.
Most of my work is collage based. Several years ago a friend asked me to help her out with a project for her Psych class. She was supposed to do a Jungian analysis of some artwork. I made a few collages for her. (I won't go into the details of the analysis!) I enjoyed it so much that I have been making collages ever since. I collect found images from anywhere you can imagine. Most of the images in my collages come from antique magazines or ads from current magazines. I have never been any good at coming up with clever titles. I make a lot of work so using simple descriptive titles helps me keep them all catalogued in my brain. Most of my collages are very narrative in nature but I just make them up as I go along. I have to admit that I don't spend much time analyzing what they mean. The process of making them is spontaneous and fun. Everything at the Clown Lounge is stuff that I have already shown in the past few years. I am saving up my most recent work for a show with Kate Van Cleve and Michael Sweere at Rosalux in September.”
Paintings and Collages by Jennifer Davis runs through July 24. Clown Lounge @ Turf Club, 1601 University Ave., St. Paul. 651-647-0486.
