The 400 Bar

Ivy’s undeniable energy was captured adequately on their first two albums, only to vanish later on into over-produced ethereal pop. Parisian chanteuse Dominique Durand is blessed and cursed with a too perfect voice apt to float away in the cloud of an overdone studio track. While these airy confections were more than radio friendly, they only hinted towards a more complex musical vein. Wisely, on their new album, the band chose to aim for the more imperfect, and quickly recorded with little planning—the result is In the Clear. Durand’s voice shows a wider range, able to evoke heartache and disillusionment in a well placed whisper, though her feet still never touch the ground. The addition of disco fused beats and slinking bass lines provide the perfect accompaniment to Durand’s sugar-laced vocals. As if to summarize the band’s musical direction on “Thinking of You” Durand goes on to sing “Never look back/Can’t go back to where I’ve gone before.” With that attitude Ivy will be around for quite some time. With Astaire. 9 p.m. $13 adv/$15 door. 21+. 400 Cedar Ave. S., Mpls. 612-332-2903. Adrienne Urbanski

Halloween, Alaska and Josh Scott
Cedar Cultural Center

Thanks to the emergence of 89.3 the Current, local electronic pop combo Halloween, Alaska are basking in a newfound spotlight, even though frontman James Diers relocated to Los Angeles over a year ago and the band has gigged sparingly in the 18 months since their debut (an expanded reissue on a larger label hit streets at the end of April). Who knows what kind of rabid fandom will break loose when the band unveils their follow-up record, Too Tall To Hide, this September? Expect to hear plenty of cuts from that upcoming record and the usual display of top-flight musicianship from an established crew whose past and current band credits speak for themselves (12Rods, The Bad Plus, Love-Cars and too many other to list here). Be sure to get there early as opener Josh Scott is not to be missed. Scott’s Eau Claire, Wis., rock band, Amateur Love, only managed to play a handful of gigs here in the Twin Cities before going on hiatus, but anyone lucky enough to catch them or hear the group’s nervey debut, It’s All Aquatic, should feel privileged. The band was halfway through a second album with producer extraordinaire Ev (who, not coincidentally, just happens to man the keys in Halloween, Alaska) when they parted ways, and although it remains to be seen what will happen with those recordings you can get a taste of Scott’s stunning talents and attention-grabbing voice (the man could give Thom Yorke a run for his money in the semi-operatic pop singer department any day of the week) right here and now. 8 p.m. $10. All Ages. 416 Cedar Ave. S., Mpls. 612-338-2674. Rob van Alstyne

Bao Phi CD Release
The Loft/open book

The Twin Cities spoken word scene has plenty of potential, some brimming talents, but few with the incendiary power of Bao Phi. His voice is the bill long overdue from the Vietnam War, a secret urban diary and a rebellious riff. With his audacious style, Bao Phi kidnaps Hip-Hop for his own purpose, rippling out from the Nuyorkian Cafe to the West Coast. Part indictment of past and present, part love letter to the future, Bao Phi’s performances can change your DNA. Upon first hearing his debut CD, Flares, one immediately craved another. The long-awaited REFUGEOGRAPHY is a 2-CD set (one live) with collaboration from TC artists Truth Maze, Emily Chang, Juliana Pegues and others.(Special event price $10). This will be a night to remember, so don’t miss it. 7 p.m. Free. 1011 Washington Ave S., Mpls. 612-822-2300. Lydia Howell

Robert Skoro
The Triple Rock Social Club

In what’s becoming a welcoming trend, a lot of young Twin Cities talent (Jeff Hanson, Hockey Night) have been getting signed to prestigious, nationally distributed indie labels. Robert Skoro can now be counted among that elite group. The full-length follow up to Skoro’s 2002 debut Proof won’t be dropping until September, but when it does, that will be courtesy of Yep Roc records (currently home to such icons as Paul Weller and Bob Mould—not shabby company for a guy still shy of 24 years old). In the meantime folks can check out the former Mason Jennings bassist’s self-titled teaser EP, which features three new dollops of darkly tender folk-pop alongside “2318” (Proof’s standout track). Judging by the dense sound of “All the Angles,” the record Skoro cooked up last fall with famed producer Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Iron & Wine) will be well worth the long wait. With The Travis Morrison Hellfighters, Cataract Camp. 9 p.m. $8. 21+. 629 Cedar Ave. S., Mpls. 612-333-7399. van Alstyne

Richard Heinberg
St. Anthony Park Library

Journalist, educator, author and musician Richard Heinberg is one of the best authors you’ve never heard of. His self-published magazine was nominated for a 1994 Alternative Press award and has been included in Utne magazine’s list of Best Alternative Newsletters. He has written thoughtful articles on history, ecology and religion for national publications, and teaches courses on energy and society at the New College of California. In recent years, Heinberg has increasingly turned his attention to the future of energy, writing “The Party’s Over: Oil, War, and the Fate of Industrial Societies” in 2003 and “Power Down” this year—both about how the world could prepare for a future energy crunch. Heinberg will speak about the end of an oil-based economy. 2 p.m. 2245 Como Ave., St. Paul. 651-646-5266. Brian Kaller

Jim Manahan
Resource Center of the Americas

Longtime Mankato attorney Jim Manahan has fought for individual freedoms for many years as a leader of the Minnesota Civil Liberties Union, and later as a board member of the ACLU. Recently, Manahan and others journeyed through Cuba to learn about that country’s legal system. He talked to police, lawyers and ordinary people, and watched a Communist neighborhood group in action. This Saturday, Manahan and other group members will share what they learned during their trip. This appearance is part of the Resource Center of the Americas’ Coffee Hour, a weekly talk and discussion with a featured speaker. 10 – 11:30 a.m. $4/$3 members. 3019 Minnehaha Ave., Mpls. 612-276-0788 ext. 15. Benefit Show for Johnny Hanson
Cabooze Bar

Ever since the Twin Cities landmark Cabooze Bar opened in 1974, local graphic artist Johnny Hanson has been the master craftsman of posters used to advertise many of its shows. From national acts like BB King, John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy and Junior Wells to local diehards Lamont Cranston Band, Willie and the Bees and the Daisy Dillman Band, Hanson has captured the essence of our beloved music scene on more than 500 pieces of art. This weekend about 50 pieces from his collection will be featured in “30 Years of Cabooze Art” as part of a special benefit for the artist. Diagnosed with oral cancer in the fall of 2004, Hanson has been disease-free since May, but mounting medical bills and personal costs have taken their toll. Sunday’s bill includes performances by Pat Hayes and a Lamont Cranston Super Jam, International Reggae All Stars, Hillbilly Voodoo Dolls, Paul Metsa, 30 lbs. of Bluejeans and Hanson’s own band, the New Icons. In addition to working on projects for his business, Johnny’s Illustrative Design, Hanson plans to release an original comic book “Bossapolis”—a series of real and fictitious stories about the local music community—at the end of the year. Doors 7 p.m./music 8 p.m. $10 suggested donation. 917 Cedar Ave., Mpls. 612-338-6425. Nancy Sartor

First Avenue

Simply put: Britt Daniel is a total bad-ass. This is a man who sweats charisma. Daniel was already a brash rock star when he was playing for free at Eclipse Records in St. Paul four years ago—the size of his audience just finally caught up with his aura. And rightfully so, Spoon may have been in the indie-rock game for a decade, but the Austin, Texas-based group restlessly honed their sound every step of the way to finally reach the pared down bliss of Gimme Fiction. On Gimme Fiction taut faux disco (“I Turn My Camera On”) nestles up next to cryptically romantic strum sessions (“I Summon You”) and bounces off of the typically stunning cinematic spy movie goodness that Spoon made their name on in the first place (“The Two Sides of Monsieur Valentine” sounds like it came straight off of 2001’s breakout album Girls Can Tell). The end result is an album so undeniably cool it will be air conditioning me all summer long. Putting a dangerously libidinous and disturbing spin on the all-too-frequently-staid world of indie-rock, Spoon are simply electrifying. With The Clientele. 6 p.m. $12 adv / $15 door. All Ages. 701 First Ave. N., Mpls. 612-338-8388. van Alstyne

The Turf Club

When I was but a little pipsqueak punk forbidden from going to concerts in scary downtown Omaha, a band played that I desperately wanted to see. Their versatile, abrasive-yet-catchy electronic music intrigued me more than any other indie rock act of the mid-‘90s, and even though I couldn’t go to the show, I kept the purple Xeroxed poster above my bed for six years. Thus began my love affair with Brainiac. Tragically, vocalist Tim Taylor died in a car crash on the way home from the band’s recording studio before my generation ever got to see them play. Thankfully, out of the ashes of that calamity came Enon. Now on their fifth CD release in five years, Lost Marbles and Exploded Evidence, Enon includes ex-members of Brainiac, Skeleton Key and Van Pelt. Although blending the musical styles of all these outfits into beautifully cacophonous and diverse albums, Enon particularly preserves the electro-catchy spirit and style of Brainiac. On Lost Marbles, which is actually a collection of B-sides, tracks like the spastic “Marbles Explode” offer dissonant bursts of sound, while “Kanon” showcases Toko Yasuda’s breathy vocals over an electro-pop backdrop, and “Blow Infinite Ways” is slow and dreamy in a synthesized sort of way. Since it’s a collection, the album is diverse enough to never get monotonous, and the music exudes energy and passion—all of which should make for an excellent show. With Thunderbirds Are Now. 9 p.m. $7. 21+. The Corner of University and Snelling Avenue, St. Paul. 651-647-0486. Michelle Lee
