John Nichols at Arise!
Wednesday 15 November @ 13:38:55 |
by NANCY SARTOR
Americans have spoken. We got our vote on in the midterm elections and unequivocally shifted the balance of power from red to blue in a Democratic sweep of the nation. Now it’s up to the standing and newly-elected DFL members of Congress, as well as any conscionable Republicans, to do their part: lay down the law and expel this Reckless Cowboy.
For six years Bush and his posse have lied, cheated, stolen and murdered their way through failed foreign and domestic policies. Rumsfeld was fired and Bush should be next. If Bill Clinton—the smart, successful, moderate leader of the free world can be impeached for a blow job … a blow job (from a legal, consenting, heterosexual), what of this administration?
Just ask John Nichols. He wrote the book on it: “The Genius of Impeachment: The Founder’s Cure for Royalism,” which traces the history of impeachment and outlines the necessity of it in today’s political climate.
Nichols is a well-respected Washington correspondent and political writer for the Nation magazine. He is also a contributing writer for The Progressive and In These Times, and associate editor of the Capital Times, the daily newspaper in Madison, Wisc.
Nichols was featured in Robert Greenwald’s documentary “Outfoxed,” and has written other highly acclaimed works, including “Jews for Buchanan” (about the Florida recount of 2000), “Dick: The Man Who is President” and “Tragedy and Farce: How American Media Sell Wars, Spin Elections and Destroy Democracy.”
Critics are calling his latest work thoughtful, impassioned and meticulously researched. Studs Terkel says, “Never within my nonagenarian memory has the case for impeachment of Bush and his equally crooked confederates been so clearly and fervently offered as John Nichols has done in this book. They are, after all, our public servants who have rifled our savings, bled our young, and challenged our sanity. As Tom Paine said 200 years ago to another George, a royal tramp: ‘Bugger off!’ So should we say today. And Nichols has given us the history, the language and the arguments we will need to do so.”
John Nichols will be at Arise! Bookstore on Thursday at 7 p.m. to discuss his book and answer questions. Arise! is located at 2441 Lyndale Ave. S. For information call 612-327-9115 or go to arisebookstore.org. ||
