MMA Awards
First Ave

The Minnesota Music Awards are celebrating their 25th anniversary this year, and as such, are making a game attempt to renew their vows with the music fans in the cities by staging the whole shebang not up in St. Cloud as they did last year, but at First Avenue, which is really where this kind of thing belongs. You can count on Prince to win something (shouldn’t he just get a Lifetime Achievement Award and be banned from categories like R&B Performer so someone else can get a shot?) and there’s bound to be the kind of uncorked mayhem you rarely see at the Oscars. Plenty of great bands and presenters will be on hand, so do your best not to miss it. Performances by JoAnna James, Desdamona, Kid Dakota, the STNNNG, Trampled by Turtles, Nachito Herrera and Cloud Cult. 7 p.m. All Ages. $10 Adv./$12 Door. 701 First Ave. N., Mpls. 612-338-8388. Steve McPherson

International Peace Day Concert
Hennepin Avenue Methodist Church

The Minnesota Alliance of Peacemakers, a group representing more than 60 Minnesota Peace organizations, will host a benefit concert featuring local greats Butch Thompson, Pop Wagner and Gina Citoli, plus a Native American Drum and Jingle Dancer, MC and Musician/Entertainer Rick Bernardo and others. The event will be co-sponsored by Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Peace & Justice Committee. Proceeds go to the Gulf disaster relief effort and the Peace Foundation of North Minneapolis, a group devoted to promoting nonviolence. The United Nations International Day of Peace, a day of global ceasefire and nonviolence, was started through a unanimous resolution of the UN General Assembly, declaring that Peace Day be observed on the same date each year. 7 p.m. $25/$15 students/seniors Hennepin Avenue Methodist Church, 511 Groveland Ave., Mpls. Hollow City
Walker Art Center

The Global Lens series at the Walker continues with the tragic “Hollow City.” This saga of an impetuous, headstrong runaway is a far cry from Huck Finn, immersing its 11-year-old protagonist in a world of hard circumstance. An orphan named N’dala is airlifted from the African village of Bei, where he saw his family murdered by soldiers, to refuge in Angola’s capital city of Luanda. Rather than stay put and accept help from nuns at the church who saved him, he scampers off to the street and makes his generally hapless way, adapting to life in the big city—or at least the poor folk’s part of it. On the bright side, we watch the rascal connect with hustling, ghetto-bound grown-ups who get by on grit and wit—and offer him a nurturing sense of community. They are, however, powerless to keep the kid out of harm’s way. “Hollow City” will never get the widespread attention of “Tears of the Sun” or “Hotel Rwanda,” but it’s every bit as profound a statement decrying the sheer madness of war and the inherent cruelty of mankind. For good measure, young Roldan Pinto Joao, who’s about the same age as the character he plays, has solid focus, brandishing ability well beyond his years. And there’s an excellent score—haunting, jubilant and a flawless complement to the tale. 2004, Angola. In Portuguese with English subtitles. $4 – $8. 1750 Hennepin Ave., Mpls. Dwight Hobbes

Hootenanny 2005
Columbia Grounds

I met musical crusader Paul Metsa a couple weeks ago at a fundraiser for a mutual friend who recently suffered a horrible car accident and now finds herself in a long-term rehab center, physically disabled and under a mountain of medical-related debt. Metsa was there to lend both musical and moral support—playing an acoustic set for family and friends and offering inspirational quips between numbers. Chatting over coffee, the sunburned troubadour told me he’d already performed at two other benefits that day—one for the annual clean up of the Mississippi River and one to commemorate 9/11. Primarily a folksinger, Metsa’s been a social justice advocate for decades, championing worker rights and disavowing hypocritical American politics. But these days he is most passionate about one thing: saving the Guthrie Theater from demolition. In 2001 he founded SaveTheGuthrie.org and has been working ever since to raise awareness about (and money for) the Minneapolis landmark. Construction for the new Guthrie is well underway, and, in fact, the theater will reopen next spring on the Minneapolis waterfront. The Walker Art Center, which owns the building that houses the Guthrie now, has announced plans to demolish it and replace it with two acres of landscape. The Historic Guthrie Preservation Coalition (HGPC), a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, intends to challenge the Walker plan. Metsa touts the architectural and historic significance of the Guthrie and has recently finished collaborating on a business proposal that advocates transforming the existing space into the Rapson Theater (the building was designed by Ralph Rapson), which would offer both mainstream programming and a venue for Native American, Hispanic, African American, Somali, Vietnamese, Hmong and other artists. This weekend’s Northeast Hootenanny 2005 is an art and music celebration to benefit the cause. Metsa’s put together an impressive array of friends and colleagues to foot the musical bill which features more than two dozen artists, including Spider John Koerner, Dakota Dave Hull, Rena Haus, Grant Hart, Ol’ Yeller, The New Primitives, Sensacion Latina and many more. Fri. 6 – 10 p.m.; Sat. 10 a.m. –10 p.m.; Sun. 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. $10 - $15 or $30 for a weekend pass. Special VIP events as well. 3301 Central Ave. NE, Mpls. 612-781-7873. Nancy Sartor

Oyster Farmer
Oak Street Cinema

Australian writer/director Anna Reeves makes a stunning debut with her film “Oyster Farmer,” which has been described as her “love letter to Australia.” This bad-boy-meets-local-girl love story is set in a small river town where everybody gets around by boat. Pearl meets Jack while hitching a ride downriver: the oyster farmer Jack works for lives “up the inlet, left at the beer can, past the mangoes, and you can’t miss it.” Jack pulls a heist using long wide strips of boysenberry fruit wrap to disguise himself, and must stay in town long enough to receive the goods he mailed to himself. He finds himself falling for Pearl, the “bastard daughter of the local shit collector” who is considered high-maintenance because of her affinity for pricey mail order footwear. This film reminded me of an Australian “Fargo”—wonderful characters abound, such as the oyster farmer’s widower dad, a self-proclaimed expert on women, and the farmer’s wife, who sings to her husband’s prize-winning oysters. I wasn’t clear about the whole oyster sub-culture thing (like why is it important to keep oysters away from southernly winds to prevent spawning before they go to market?) but the manly man prattle surrounding it is both telling and funny—the oyster farmer ribs his dad: “Unzip your fly and your brains will fall out.” The male-female relationships seem important to this film, and most of it has to do with lust and obligation. Jack and Pearl share a pivotal moment when Jack asks her, “What makes you think I’ll be here next week?” Pearl answers, “Because you look good here.” Stephen Warbeck composed a beautiful acoustic original score for “Oyster Farmer”—he is with the British Royal Shakespeare Company and won an Oscar for his score on “Shakespeare in Love” a few years back. 7:30 & 9:30 p.m. $8/$6.50 students/seniors. 309 Oak St. SE, Mpls. Four Tet
Triple Rock Social Club

The life of a famed remixer must be a tough one in certain ways. Fame is yours, and everyone who values rare tracks is hunting down your remixes of Radiohead tracks, but mainstream success eludes you. I guess, though, that Kieran Hebden probably doesn’t care. He’s a musician’s musician, a gearhead’s remixer, and his set at Chicago’s Intonation Festival washed the park in twitchy electronic vibes. His attachment to folktronica is well-documented (even if he denies it), but his newest disc, Everything Ecstatic, is considerably less pastoral and more chunky and spiky. As his career as a producer (of Beth Orton’s next disc) and a remixer (most recently and impressively of some Madvillain tracks) blossoms, Hebden’s life as Four Tet seems to be taking him in more adventurous directions. More power to him. With Hot Chip and Koushik. 9 p.m. 21+. $10 adv./$12 door. 629 Cedar Ave., Mpls. 612-333-7499. McPherson

Peaceable Kingdom
Coffman Theater

Imagine awakening one day to realize that the work you were trained to do since birth, the life you had always imagined you’d lead, the very values that had been taught in your family for generations, went against the deepest part of your being. In the film “Peaceable Kingdom” we hear the riveting stories of people struggling with their conscience around some of society’s most fundamental assumptions. “Peaceable Kingdom” takes an eye- and heart-opening journey to the front lines of an unseen national drama. Propelled by the eloquent testimony of farmers questioning the fundamental assumptions behind their way of life, a riveting portrait emerges of human and animal lives caught in an out of control industrial machine. Much more than an exposé, the film is an inspiring story of personal redemption, compassion, healing and hope. 7:00 p.m. Free. U of M East Bank, 300 Washington Ave., Mpls. TribeOfHeart.org/Press. 612-270-5696. Aaron Neumann
