Review on The Takeovers
Friday 15 June @ 15:17:23 |
There’s a first time for everything (and everybody) by MICKEY CAULFIELD Oregon-based indie rockers The Takeovers may not have chosen the right opening track for their sophomore album, Bad Football. The first song, "You're At It," gives the impression that this album is going to be a suicidal train wreck that strains to reach the pitches (not in a good way) and is altogether a bland and generic, if not mediocre, stab at making some indie rock. This is not what Bad Football is, but for a first-time Takeovers listener like myself, the first song is at the very least a turn-off. But from there it really picks up! The second song, "Little Green Onion Man," features a catchy bass riff and vocals that owe more than a little to John Lennon. Not a bad combination at all. The Takeover's decision to release this song on 7" as the single is not a mistake.
The third track, "Father's Favorite Temperature," reminds me of nothing if not country. Specifically, the Dixie Chicks. Don't take this the wrong way ... it's a good thing. Being able to create vocal anthems like that is not something just anybody can do.
"Pretty Not Bad," the quirky sixth track, is self-admittedly styled after Cheap Trick, with a "fake British accent" thrown in for good measure. The Takeovers' Robert Pollard (of Guided by Voices fame) pulls off sounding like the kind of rock god that plays stadiums, yet still maintains his indie stylings.
This isn't to say that Bad Football is a flawless rock-and-roll masterpiece. By the end of the 12-track album, it gets pretty tiresome. In the case of one song, "Music for Us," I'm not sure if Pollard is trying to parody Randy Newman or if he just wrote a bad song and nobody told him to leave it off. But all-in-all, the Takeovers are worth picking up.
