Box Fresh at the Soap Factory
Thursday 16 September @ 16:57:24 |
by Valerie Valentine
Huge spaces make for huge shows. Soap Factory has filled its warehouse with work from college art programs in the area. Most prominent are U of M, College of Visual Arts, and Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
Others include Macalester and St. Olaf. With a show this big, there's no way to consider every slice of the glut. Universities shove artists off into the world by the handful everyday, but who will take the art world by storm? Here are some artists and works to keep an eye on.
Robert Marbury (MCAD) turns stuffed animals into lovable beasts. The creatures
look like Muppets gone mad—so scary and unnatural looking that they almost
negate themselves into normalcy. Jonas Lindberg (CVA) built an "Urban Trail"
with wooden clogs turned into thongs filled with dirt. It's a great choice of
odd materials and the Dadaism is a clever twist too: something useful made useless,
in line with the oxymoronic title. Liz Miller (U of M) shows up yet again, with
a new site-specific installation using pale plastics to create a watery, sea
foam scenario.
This Notion is only Temporary by tectonic industries—a collaborative art
partnership of Lars Jerlach and Helen Stringfellow—offers viewers an opportunity
to participate in a personality test. What's amusing about the concept is in
the title—how we answer arbitrary questions ("Which Sex in the City
character are you?") definitely depends on the moment and mood of each
individual. The project is clean and glossy, with clipboards, pencils and score
sheets lined up on the wall. Multiple choice questions are projected onto a
wall and you can answer as many as you like. Then, based on the category you
most often select, your personality is identified as either a boat, rocket,
suitcase, trash can, car or airplane. A nice take-it-with-you summary of each
persona is provided, including directions to cut and build your vessel of choice.
Advice is offered to resolve general problems, and while the pseudo-self-help
tone appears to be a spoof, sincerity is implied. Everybody loves quizzes, and
this one is great kicks. Bring a friend! |
Box Fresh and This Notion is Only Temporary run through Oct. 24 at The Soap Factory, 2nd St., SE, Mpls., 612-623-9176.
