Doane on the Street

Pulse's Rock'n'Roll soldier patrols the local scene for your own good.
 Flim Flam Man
Although they wanted no fanfare and perhaps even wished to dissolve unnoticed into anonymity, I feel I should at least say a peep regarding the passing of local zany punk band Flim Flam Man. The band fused many disorders from which the residents of the rock ’n’ roll insane asylum suffer to create a palsied twitch that could give those with even the most iron-clad constitution violent tics. This is the kind of music you want to pull a Clockwork Orange on your boss-man with. Just get some duct tape, an uncomfortable metal chair, a discreet location, a turkey-baster, a keg of beer, a Discman and Flim Flam Man. Oh yes, don’t forget your victim.
It seems the primary reason for throwing in the beer and sweat stained towel was the recent relocation of singer Mike Nicolosi to the Boston area in order to continue his education. In an interview with Mike two summers ago, he went on the record saying that rock ‘n’ roll is a noble pursuit, which it damn well is. And even though those who think that way are usually considered foolish, crazy or misguided by the vast majority, we just flip’em back the finger and continue being who we actually are. And that’s a mighty high crime here in the land of pimps and thugs. So, Mike is moving on to another noble pursuit, and one more that wouldn’t be considered cool by that same majority of sheep who are living examples of passive verbs such as “obey,” “submit” and “behave.”
If you want an example of the disdain shown for intelligence and enthusiasm for creative behavior, just try speaking intelligently to a cop the next time you’re hassled. The smarter you sound, the quicker you sink. If, however, you have the presence to understand the game, simply respond in the appropriate Pig Latin of “yes sir” and “no sir” and you’ll soon be on your way, followed only by a suspicious stare behind which burns the power-buzz—a certain neural process that only a select breed of ape possesses the corresponding neurotransmitter to experience. Or, in simpler language, call it self-validation through intimidation and attempted subordination.
So, even though those of us who dare to be difficult are greatly outnumbered, we stick to our guns and maintain the pitched battle between authenticity and authority. Mike will always be who he is regardless of whether he’s in a band or not, as will the rest of Flim Flam Man. Both bassist Guy Low and drummer Frenchy a.k.a. Scott Fremont will be around keeping it real, the former in an as of yet unnamed project and the latter with Effloresce and Danny Commando y Los Guapos. And hopefully, guitarist Matt Knutson will be tearing it up in a new project as well. As has been said, “the show must go on.” And it will, as both Mike and Flim Flam Man close one book only to open another. My best to Mike. It was a privilege to have known him the short time I did and I hope we cross paths again. With FFM’s departure, the Twin Cities will definitely become a cleaner, safer place. But in this case, that’s not such a good thing. As for things around these parts, Guy, Frenchy, yours truly and a few other grunts have already drafted the blueprints for the construction of the next weapon of musical destruction. So stay tuned and try to get ahold of a copy of FFM’s last album Try to Sell This—a beautifully heady concoction of psychedelic laced punk.
Hit That Street A Runnin’
Well, that about does it. One more thing I’d like to inform local tune fiends of is a benefit for Janis Figure singer Billy Bisson being hosted at the Uptown Bar on August 8th and 9th, Friday and Saturday respectively. Volunteering their services will be Likehell, Houston and the Van GoGos on the 8 and Dillinger Four, Kruddler and The Squabs on the 9. So come on down and help Billy out. And when the man starts stepping on your balls, all you need to do is say it like Dre and tell him to “RAISE UP OFF DEEZ NUTS!” Word yo. I gotta dip.
Send all mail to Pulse. And as always, all my love.
