Reader Concerned about giving pirates a bad name
I am writing to express my concern about the use of the phrase “Pawlenty the Pirate” and the use of the pirate images on the front page of the Jan 22-28 edition of the Pulse.
Historically speaking pirates were not heads of state or even of royal blood. They were usually free spirits on the run from an oppressive society. Pirates lived in egalitarian communities, shared evenly what they had and were making decisions by democratic process while western Europe was still fighting over who was king of what.
Pirates didn’t steal form the homeless, poor, or the elderly as you have portrayed. They made their lives their own by plundering the spoils of England, France, The East India Company and the aristocracy.
I know that most of the stories we hear about pirates (usually by aristocratic socialites) make out pirates as evil. I suggest you consider the sources. Pirates deserve better than to be put in the same boat as that miserable sot, Pawlenty.
By the way, Pawlenty wouldn’t make a very good Robin Hood either.
Sincerely,
Pyrate Bill

To the Editor:
Shakespeare had it right. “Cry Havoc! And let slip the dogs of war.” This is where we are today as this administration pushes to have a war on Iraq.
Columnist Mark Shields has written that only four members of Congress have a child in the military.
President Bush should urge his 21-year-old twin daughters to volunteer for military service. Every person in Congress who voted to authorize the use of military force in Iraq should do the same regarding their children and grandchildren of appropriate age.
The warmakers should have the first opportunity to put their loved ones in harm’s way.

Protest the warmongers “State of the Union Address”
The Bush Regime came to power through deception, intimidation, and elite manipulation. Now, he and his henchman are attempting to use deception, intimidation, and elite manipulation to maneuver the United States into an all-out war against Iraq. Even though the United Nations inspectors are still engaged in a lengthy process of locating and disarming weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, the Bush war machine inexorably mobilizes its incredible destructive force.
Desperate to convince a skeptical public in the United States and throughout the world, Bush will use his “State of the Union” message to once more spread lies about the situation in Iraq. We should no longer tolerate such self-interested propaganda. In a nonviolent manner, we should gather at any and all major media outlets during the broadcast of the “State of the Union” message. With a determined spirit, we should bang the pots of peace and blow the anti-war whistles to drown out the propaganda of war. We need to demonstrate that we will not tolerate being railroaded into an oil-driven and ideological crusade by the warmongering clique of the Bush Regime.
