Lo-Hi Say It More The Music [S/T] Sorry About Dresden Let It Rest Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks Pig Lib MC Honky I Am The Messiah Chromatics Chrome Rats vs. Basement Rutz The Thermals More Parts Per Million Idlewild The Remote Part
Lo-Hi Say It More Tiger Style Records
If Meg White of the White Stripes were given a stronger voice, Lo-Hi’s front gal Hollis Queens (formerly the drummer of Boss Hog) could still rock you harder. This album has much the same stripped-down feel as The Stripes, but with an even more Herculean essence (and tasteful organ additions here and there to boot!) If this spring finds you with an urge to put on your rock ’n’ roll shoes, this would be a perfect soundtrack to that impulse.

The Music [S/T] Capitol
“Robust” is the first word that comes to mind when I think of this album. The Music is emphatically British, but you will hear none of the gentleness of Radiohead, poppiness of Blur, or radio-friendliness of Coldplay on their debut. The Music’s music is the kind that reminds me of that Memorex commercial where the guy sits in a chair with his sunglasses and glass of white wine and gets blown away by sound. This disc is for fans of a larger-than-life rock/psychedelic/guitar heavy (but not metal) sound.

Sorry About Dresden Let It Rest Saddle Creek
Total recall of indie rock in the ’90s, dude! Sorry About Dresden’s new release is pretty straightforward. It reminds me not only of pop punk in its feeling and presentation, but of bands like Possum Dixon, Guided By Voices, and Superchunk, as well. This is an enjoyable no-brainer of a listen and sometimes that is all you need a record to be.

Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks Pig Lib Matador
Former Pavement guy releases second solo album. Midtempo anyone? What about twist and turns on the guitar? The foundation of Malkmus’ solo efforts are not unlike Pavement’s. What it represents is the maturation of a great songwriter. There’s direction and clarity, but there’s still a naivete to it that will probably always be a part of his song craft. Fans of the last couple Pavement albums would definitely appreciate this album.

MC Honky I Am The Messiah Spin Art
I would much rather be listening to Cat Power’s “You Are Free” for the hundredth time this week, but I’m not. I’m listening to Silverlake, CA’s MC Honky and their eclectic brand of electronic music. It’s a little unoriginal if you ask me, but these days anything will satiate those dancing fools, so I suppose it might do. Still, if you’re looking for something to really-really shake your ass to, don’t sell yourself short and keep looking for something better.
Chromatics Chrome Rats vs. Basement Rutz GSL
This band sounds like the time where a close friend was PMSing so bad she decided to call all our close friends and complain about absolutely nothing. You might not like to hear that, but I think it’s great that there’s a type of post-rock to parallel that moment. Or that sounds like being sloppy drunk with a hint of resentment! Though imperfect, the songs are fun and would make for a good listen when you’re feeling like a slightly dirty, manic punk.

The Thermals More Parts Per Million Sub Pop
Portland’s The Thermals know how to give you a good dose of rock and roll. Their enjoyable lo-fi album is less than a half hour long! It leaves the listener wanting more of their sassy dork-rock. (Think The Pee Chees.) This record propels you back to high school, watching the cute weird boy play in his band at your best friend’s birthday party. And you find yourself smiling at him, developing a new crush…

Idlewild The Remote Part Capitol
Idlewild represent the big rock sound of today, saluting the Cure and REM of the 80s. This is one of the better albums of late. If you’re a fan of any type of rock, you will eat this up! God bless these boys from abroad for bringing us this radio-friendly but sophisticated rock with excellent production and that comfortable wall of sound. Purchase this for yourself, and every member of your family!
