The Youngers Reunion Show
@7th Street Entry

When St. Paul outlaw rockers The Youngers played their farewell show at The Turf Club a while back, folks around these parts figured they’d seen the last of these hard-ass, guitar-slingin’ rounders. Well, word on the snowy streets of the Saintly City sez that lead Younger Chris Mirski is back in town an’ gunnin’ for all you Minneapolis yahoos who thought you could fill his boots. Him an’ the rest of the Younger gang (including current Mammy Nuns axeman Dave Hazeldine) will be steppin’ up on the dusty stage of The Entry tonight for a rock an’ roll showdown that’s sure to be louder an’ bloodier than the infamous Northfield bank robbery. Don’t miss a chance to possibly get hit by a stray Youngers’ bullet (errr..splash of beer?)- this is gonna be one helluva show for the wild, wild Midwest. The Marones open. 8 p.m., 21+, $5. Call First Avenue at 612-338-8388 for more info. (Tom Hallett)

Ghetto Blaster #15
@First Avenue

First Avenue presents their 15th consecutive Ghetto Blaster dance night, an 18+ event in their Main Room. This gig brings together some of the area’s hottest dance/trance acts and provides a great venue for the under-21 crowd to sweat out some of their angst. Tonight’s lineup includes Echo, Strangelove, Skyy, Cypher, and Hard Drive. 9 p.m., 18+, $4, $6 after 11p.m. Call First Avenue for more info at 612-338-8388. (Hallett)

Heiruspecs
With Oddjobs
@The Bryant Lake Bowl

Twin Cities live hip-hop group Heiruspecs have built themselves a respectable fan base and garnered scads of critical acclaim over the past year for their fresh, authentic approach to the genre. They’ve co-founded their own hip-hop collective, Interlock, and recently won The Honey Nut Cheerios (I shit you not) Sweet Sounds of Soul Contest, where they met their heroes, The O’Jays. Oddjobs celebrate the release of their new CD, Absorbing Playtime (see Lovisa Dahlgren’s 12/20 review in the Pulse Archives at www.pulsetc.com), and the BLB provides a fun venue for this all-age gig. 8p.m., All-ages, $6. Call BLB for more info at 612-825-3737. (Hallett)

crutchman.jpg (16010 bytes)
“Crutchmaster”

Bill Shannon
@Southern Theater

Bill Shannon has made a name for himself among the underground performance arts. In spite of a life-long hip injury confining him to a crutch, Shannon has turned his disability into an instrument of art. Nicknamed the “Crutchmaster” for his handywork and mastery of dancing with his crutch, Shannon takes dance in directions unkown. Employing a skateboard for greater mobility, the choreographer-dancer-performance/video artist Shannon at times appears to be floating above the ground as he dances to hip-hop and club music. Shannon is joined by four other dancers, three musicians and DJ Richie D’Tempo for this show entitled Old Rain. This is the first installment in the thirteenth season of the Walker Art Center’s innovative Out There series. Get out there and see it! Jan. 4-7. Thu.-Sat. 8 p.m. and Sun. 2 p.m. $16. Southern Theater, 1420 Washington Ave. S., Mpls., 612-375-7622. (Katie Bodin)

The Gryphon
@Patrick’s Cabaret

In tradition of the Greek tragedies, Theater Gallery’s The Gryphon is an original myth performed with live music, masks, poetic text and more. Half eagle and half lion, the Gryphon is torn between being able to fly free in the sky and being stuck on the ground. The push and pull of his opposing personalities create a conflict emphasizing the struggle between fate and free will, god and individual. Opens Jan. 5. Fri.-Sun. through Jan. 14. 8 p.m. $15 & 12. Patrick’s Cabaret, 3010 Minnehaha Ave., Mpls., 612-724-7372 (Bodin)

(friday, continued..)

Amateur Film Night
@Intermedia Arts
Forget B-grade movies, tonight is the night to revel in the D-grades. Anyone can do it, right? Only at this Amateur Film Night that video tape you shot for your sixth grade social studies project might count as a movie if edited properly. Ok, well maybe that would only work if you can piece together a plot. If you hurry, yours could still get in there; submissions are being accepted up until the night of the screening. Also during this special night curator Lisa Ganser will be making her own movie “on site, renegade-style” for all to see at the end of the evening. 8 p.m. $6. Intermedia Arts, 2822 Lyndale Ave. S., Mpls., 612-871-4444 (Bodin)

Katy Tessman
CD Release Party
@The Fine Line

If there’s one thing you can honestly say about local singer/songwriter Katy Tessman, it’s that she’s tenacious as hell. While literally dozens of acoustic coffee-house performers have dropped like flies around her, moving to more artist-friendly locales or giving up entirely, she’s kept plugging away. She now has a large regional fan base, a supportive indie label (Rhythmelodic) behind her, and is about to release her latest disc, the highly touted Fall. Tonight’s gig will be a full-band performance, with Jay Moran on guitar, Bruce “Pooch” Heine on bass, and Dave Stanoch on drums. Katy also appears on KMSP Channel 9 News’ “The Buzz” segment on Thursday, 1/4, during the 9 and 10 newscasts. Do yourself a favor, and find out what the buzz is really all about. Good stuff. 7p.m., $2. Call The Fine Line at 612-338-8100. (Hallett)

Skye klad
With
The Morning Stars
And
Fadladder
@The Entry

Space rockers Skye Klad, a 5-piece “sonic research unit,” claim their music allows listeners to “travel through interstellar space without any of the discomfort usually associated with such travel.” The band popped their stage cherries opening for wacky noise outfit Savage Aural Hotbed up in Duluth a few years back, and have since won over the Twin Cities’ notoriously exuberant sci-fi/rock crowd with their Can/Chrome/Sonic Youth-influenced outer limits-grooves. Their latest, self-titled album, will be available at the show. The Morning Stars and Fadladder open. 8p.m., 21+, $5. Call First Avenue for more info at 612-338-8388. (Hallett)

The Rank Strangers
With Valet
@The Entry

Long-time Twin Cities (via Michigan’s UP) rockers The Rank Strangers, founded by guitarist/vocalist/songwriter/producer Mike Wisti (who’s been called “Koresh-like” by that other weekly rag- God knows why), return to the Entry for a weekend bash. Their last album, 1997’s Target, won an MMA for Best Rock Recording. Consumption, the band’s fourth recording, is completed and “sitting in boxes in my bedroom,” according to Wisti. The band is now a 3-piece, with Wisti on guitar and two former draghounds, Brian Lilja and Davin Odegaard, on drums and bass respectively. Always a great rock show. Indie faves Valet open. 8p.m., 21+, $6. Call First Avenue for more info at (612) 338-8388.(Hallett)

Two Ton Crutch
With
Sublevel,
Nuisance Crew
And
Smiling Liar
@First Avenue

First Ave. presents a night of balls-to-the-wall hard rock, with local faves Two Ton Crutch headlining. Sublevel is also wildly popular among the headbangin’ crowd, and Nuisance Crew and Smiling Liar round out this ear-damaging revue. If this is your thing, tonight’s your night. 4p.m., All-ages, $3 in advance, $5 at the door. Call First Avenue for more info at 612-338-8388.(Hallett)
