B-Girl Be Summit
Thursday 28 June @ 13:46:44 (Read: 18631) |
June 28 at Intermedia Arts | 12 to 5 p.m. | $5 | 21+ | ~DWIGHT HOBBES I’d love to see the looks on the faces who, back in 2005, figured an all-female Hip-Hop summit wouldn’t fly. Or, at any rate, would not last. What the shortsighted dismissed as p.c. spark has so caught fire it’s now the national and international beacon, B-Girl Be Summit. Artists and audiences literally flock from across the country and around the globe to get to this. For which one can thank Intermedia Arts and Desdamona. B-Girl Be is billed as a series of events, workshops, exhibits and performances celebrating women in Hip-Hop. That’s kind of like saying the Amazons could fight. To merely take in the breadth of this event is to realize, like the fella said, there is no force so powerful as an idea whose time has come. Go to their website. You’ll see. The third annual B-Girl Be Summit is at Intermedia Arts, 2822 Lyndale Ave. S. in Minneapolis and at other Twin Cities venues. June 28 thru July 1 with an exhibit that continues through Sept. 9. Gallery Hours: Monday-Saturday from 12 to 5 p.m. 612-871-4444.

Summer of Love
Wednesday 27 June @ 13:48:04 (Read: 10740) |
June 28 at The Turf Club | 9 p.m | $5 | 21+ | ~DWIGHT HOBBES Once upon a time (1967, actually), even before Woodstock, there was something called The Monterey International Pop Festival, boys and girls. It was the first of its kind, a giant event full of rock stars. And it showcased some of the most interesting music imaginable-–The Jimi Hendrix Experience in their American debut as well running the gamut, from soul (Otis Redding) to jazz (Laura Nyro, Lou Rawls) to you-name-it (Ravi Shankar). With, of course, most of the acts being architects of the fabled San Francisco sound, including The Airplane, The Dead and Big Brother and the Holding Company. Monterey highlighted what would come to be called the “Summer Of Love,” and anytime you hear The Airplane’s “Somebody To Love” or Big Brother’s “Summertime,” that’s the summer you’re put in mind of (rather your parents, at least).

New Local Band Showcase Night
Tuesday 26 June @ 13:09:31 (Read: 13138) |
June 28 at The Cabooze | 8:30 p.m | $5 | 21+ | ~DWIGHT HOBBES It’s going to be hard to fill the vacuum left by the New Primitives no longer being the Thursday night house-draw at The Cabooze. The braintrust behind the scenes, though, just may have come up with a winner. The long venerated club is introducing “Cabooze Local Band Showcase Night.” No word, as of yet, on whether this’ll be a monthly, bi-weekly, weekly thing or whatever. But, you reasonably gotta figure from the title that it’s not a one-shot deal. And, considering how filthy rich the Twin Cities are in homegrown talent, Cabooze management should find itself avalanched by an onslaught of artists and outfits looking for exposure. We’ll have to see how it goes. Meanwhile, presented for your perusal are aspiring attractions Running Down Renee, Refuke, Emmaline Muchmore and The Bad Shine. 8:30 p.m; $5. 21+. The Cabooze, 917 Cedar Ave S., on the West Bank in Minneapolis, 612-338-6425. DWIGHT HOBBES

Immigrant Rights Rally and Congressional Forum
Friday 22 June @ 14:23:53 (Read: 2100) |
This Saturday, June 23, Congressman Keith Ellison and Illinois Congressman Luis Gutierrez will hold a public forum on immigration reform in South Minneapolis at 2 p.m. at Washburn High School, 201 W. 49th St. The Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Coalition will hold a rally at 12:30, before the hearing, to ask Congress to pass a resolution to stop the raids and deportations that continue to terrorize the immigrant communities. Erika Zurawski, a member of MIRAC said, "As Congress refuses to find a solution to our broken immigration system, hundreds of families right here in Minnesota are being torn apart as their mothers, fathers, wives and husbands get taken from their homes and workplaces by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The only just reform is one that recognizes the contributions of immigrants to our communities and allows for the immediate and unconditional legalization of all immigrants working and living in the United States."

The Ten Second Film Festival
Monday 18 June @ 15:44:02 (Read: 1756) |
  A Soap Factory project
Many people now own small digital still cameras to replace the film cameras of yesteryear. What some of these camera owners have noticed that's different about these digital cameras is the strange "video mode" that lets us make short little movies, ten or twenty seconds long. A lot of people have these little movies, and have them sitting on their sim cards or computer hard drives. Well, instead of letting them just sit there, the project set out to collect them all and make a film fest of the best 100.

Moon Maan
Monday 18 June @ 15:16:21 (Read: 5360) |
June 22 at Triple Rock Social Club | 8p.m. | $5 | ~DWIGHT HOBBES Moon Maan play hot, tight 80s style rock with a sweet, seething vengeance. Take their killer cuts, “Be Good To Me” and “Chain Yr Soul”. The strutting boogie “Be Good To Me” comes on like gangbusters and gets stronger from there. “Chain Yr Soul” is vintage, high-voltage angst, a fiery ballad it’s very hard to get enough of. You’re gonna hear comparisons to Led Zep. Basically, because Rick McCollum sings like his balls just got scalded. Forget ‘em. Listen to these guys for the their own distinct sound – which they wield with compelling authority. Release event June 22 with The Screens, Heavy Sleeper and 757’S at Triple Rock Social Club, 629 Cedar Avenue on the West Bank in Minneapolis.

Nonetheless, they know what they are doing. They are at their best on a cut like “Simon,” combining smart-ass attitude with a hip-slung groove that dares you not to dance. These boys have an EP, The Funeral Sessions--cleanly produced, alive with energy-–that should generate a following. Especially considering after Mercurial Rage are done playing this weekend. Today (June 15) they’re at The Hexagon Bar, 2600 27th Ave. S., Mpls., at 9 p.m. On Saturday, June 16, they’re at The Triple Rock Social Club on Minneapolis’ West Bank, at 8 p.m.

Basement Apartment
Friday 15 June @ 14:30:45 (Read: 2506) |
June 16 at the Fine Line Music Cafe | 10 p.m. | $check website for cover$ | ~DWIGHT HOBBES Basement Apartment ain’t half bad. Not at all. Their album Pine Tree Hill carries a heavy John Lennon influence yet still is fresh, remarkably distinct. And the engaging cut “Tear Gas” brandishes absolutely angelic harmonies. “Vegas Streets” has a cynical strut to it and, again, tight harmonies. The song’s overall feel brings The Hollies to mind. You are not ready for “Monkey,” a handsomely dark ballad that just keeps pulling you to it. The band is Vince Caro (vocals, guitar) Kristina Kerr (vocals, guitar) Janey Winterbauer (vocals, keys) Steve Finch (bass, guitar) Andy Iwanin (drums, vocals) and they’re at Triple Rock Social Club on the West Bank in Minneapolis on June 16 at 10 p.m.

June 16 at the Cedar Cultural Center | 8 p.m. | $10 - $12 | ~DWIGHT HOBBES “Equally conversant in American fiddling, classical music and jazz improvisation, the Orange Mighty Trio … [is an] adventurous cross-pollination.” Or, so goes the press release, anyway. I don’t know about the pollination part (ain’t that something bees do), but I can tell you this: these fellas play damn good music. And, yes, it’s delightfully adventurous--sometimes playful, sometimes dark, sometimes airy--always fascinating. That’s Zack Kline (violin), Mike Vasich (piano) and Nick Gaudette (bass). And, if you like bluegrass, classical or jazz--never mind whether you’ve a taste for all three--you probably want be at the release gig for their CD debut, Orange Mighty Trio.

Room for Gray
Thursday 14 June @ 12:54:16 (Read: 2468) |
June 15 at the Fine Line Music Cafe | 8 p.m. | $8 | ~DWIGHT HOBBES Room For Gray is going to be dismissed by some folk as a Gin Blossoms knock-off. Said folk just don’t get it: Everybody is influenced by someone. Just ask the guys from Gin Blossoms why their stuff sounds so much like The Byrds. Added to that, Room For Gray do not mimic. Indeed, they pick up on the thread to weave a more consistent tapestry. Fueled by the songwriting team of emotive vocalist James Gray and inventive guitarist David Roo, with Mitch Robbins (second guitar), Kris Godfrey (drums) and Joe Steiner (bass guitar), this is a band that has their own staying power. They also have a strong EP, Moving On, which, beyond a doubt, proves the point. Go see for yourself and catch them opening for Pat McCurdy.

The Truth
Wednesday 13 June @ 12:45:53 (Read: 2263) |
June 14 | Thursday nights at The Fine Line Music Cafe | ~DWIGHT HOBBES If your favorite flava is funk (go ahead, say that five times fast), The Truth is right up your alley. These cats get so funky up on stage that somebody need to open a window. Small wonder, when you look at the lineup of Twin Cities all-stars. There’s St. Paul Peterson (vocals/keyboards), O’Dell (guitar), Jelly Bean Johnson (guitar) and Kirk Johnson (drums) with Chance Howard (keys, vocals), Jerry Hubbard (bass, vocals), Eric Leeds (sax) and Julius Collins (vocals), who recently replaced singer-keyboardist Kip Blackshire. They’ve been taking a low-key approach since getting together last June, letting word-of-mouth circulate. That will kick into high gear once their album (just recorded live at The Fine Line) comes out in September. Meanwhile, you can catch them Thursday nights at The Fine Line Music Cafe, 318 1st Ave., Mpls. 612-338-8100. And, get this, the cover is a measly $5. People will be lining up to pay a lot more than that before you know it.

Sam Kuusisto
Tuesday 12 June @ 11:34:03 (Read: 2451) |
Sam Kuusisto | The Times Bar and Café | Friday, June 15 | 9 :30 p.m.
 ~DWIGHT HOBBES
When I caught Sam Kuusisto awhile back he reminded me a bit of the late Robert Palmer. With that dapper look and gentlemanly demeanor thing. The more he sang though, the less the comparison held. While Palmer’s brand of island-flavored soul rested on an interesting, medium-weight voice that actually purloined the style of underexposed, Jamaican singers, he can’t hold a candle to Kuusisto. Soulman Sam is an original powerhouse with top notch, cast iron chops. And whether he’s wearing the pure hell out of James Brown’s “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag” or Van Morrison’s “Domino,” this guy knows how to make a song all his own. He’s in the studio, these days, with an album (including originals) slated for sometime this fall. Believe me, you’re gonna want to get it. 9:30 p.m. The Times Bar and Café, 2nd Street NE & E. Hennepin Ave, Mpls.

Afro-Caribbean Jazz:
Monday 11 June @ 12:28:58 (Read: 2615) |
Joto at Babalu
 ~DWIGHT HOBBES
You want Afro-Caribbean jazz, done to tasty “T”? Joto (that’s Swahili for “heat”) got it for ya. Spun off from Mint Condition, this splendid quintet has Mint moonlighters Jeff Allen (sax), Lawrence Waddell (keys) and Stokley (traps) with ace percussionist par excellence, Wallace Hill (Gato Barbieri, James Newton) and superbad bassist Serge Akou (Kip Blackshire, Wain McFarlane and Jahz). The material: Juan Luis Guerra's "Para Ti,” Kenny Kirkland's "Dienda,” Chick Corea's "Spain,” Thelonius Monk's "Round Midnight" and a lot more. Catching these guys in action is a real experience: They work beautifully as an ensemble and each one is an eyebrow-arching solist. Highly recommended. 8 p.m. No cover. Babablu, 800 N. Washington Ave., Mpls. 612-746-3158.

You ready for this? New Orleans style, all-brass (not reed in the bunch) band that does old-time jazz, blues, rock, pop, funk, reggae and even hip-hop. They’re called the Jack Brass Band and they’re the only such outfit in either Minneapolis or St. Paul. Which, trust me, does not make them some kind of quirky novelty act. They’ve gigged at The Cabooze, First Avenue, Jazzmine's, O'Gara's, 400 Bar and The Fine Line. And just keep right on getting work. Stop on down and see why for yourself. Sex Ed and the State
Wednesday 06 June @ 11:35:34 (Read: 1721) |
  Oak Street Cinema
When a bill is supported by strong research, a Surgeon General’s report and an overwhelming majority of Americans—what happens after it is introduced in the Minnesota State legislature? “Sex Ed and the State” is a documentary about a comprehensive sex education program in public schools. Minnesota lawmakers give interviews, along with advocates, opponents and nationwide stakeholders in the debate over the best strategy to fight adolescent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. The film, directed and produced by Phil Winkle, a graduate student at the University of Minnesota, says “Public health policy doesn’t always reflect public health data and despite polls that show widespread approval of comprehensive sexuality education in public schools, supportive legislation somehow fails to pass into state law.” This film shows how and why.

Unsane
Friday 25 May @ 12:28:12 (Read: 1687) |
New York City's Unsane assisted in pioneering a more aggressive, less studied version of noise rock, one that blended the scum/art industrial sturm und drang of Foetus, the Swans, Einsturzende Neubauten, and Sonic Youth with the decidedly more straightforward hardcore idiom favored by acts like Sick of It All. While developing the blueprint for noise-metal bands to follow, Unsane cut a remarkable swath through underground music, inspiring a devoted, cult-like following around the globe. As a power trio, Unsane relied upon a hammering, power-press rhythm section, a searing Telecaster howl, and distorted vocals that resembled nothing if not the sound of a man trapped in the New York Subway system.

Kosta Harlan, an antiwar activist from North Carolina, recently traveled to Italy to attend the international conference, “With the Resistance—for a Just Peace in the Middle East.” The conference marks the first time that leaders of the Iraqi national resistance have been able to speak in the West. Kosta will report back on who the resistance is and why they fight; the current conditions of the U.S. occupation of Iraq; the birth and development of the Iraqi resistance; and the tasks of the U.S. antiwar movement. Q & A to follow. Sponsored by the Anti-War Committee, MayDay Books and Freedom Road Socialist Organization. Endorsed by IPACE (the Iraq Peace Action Coalition.)

VALENTINO ACHEK DENG
Lyndale United Church of Christ This Friday, Magers & Quinn Booksellers presents Valentino Achak Deng, one of Sudan’s “lost boys,” and the subject of Dave Eggers’ extraordinary book “What is the What” (McSweeney’s). Deng will discuss his life and Eggers’ fictionalized autobiography, which chronicles Deng’s experiences from his pre-war life in Marial Bai, to his resettlement in the United States. Separated from his family, Valentino became a refugee in war-ravaged southern Sudan. His travels brought him in contact with enemy soldiers, liberation rebels, hyenas and lions, disease and starvation and deadly murahaleen (militias on horseback)—the same sort who currently terrorize Darfur. All of the proceeds from “What is the What” go to Valentino’s Foundation, which aids the Sudanese in America and Sudan. For more information on Valentino, the Foundation and Eggers’ book, visit valentinoachakdeng.com. 7:30 p.m. $5 ($3 donated to Valentino’s Foundation). 801 W. 31st St., Mpls. 612-822-4611. AUDRA OTTO
