Two items in the March 9 edition of the Guardian Weekly could easily have gone into the old Robert Leroy Ripley column, “Believe it or Not”:
–Registered lobbyists have doubled in George Bush’s tenure and they now spend about $25 million per politician each year to leverage their agendas.
–Hillary Clinton spent $27,000 on valet parking and $13,000 on flowers in November. (Polly Mann)

In case you missed it...Next—Air America wing at Guatanamo Bay?
The Department of Homeland Security has charged alt journalist Greg Palast and television producer Matt Pascarella with unauthorized filming of a “critical national security structure” in Louisiana. Palast reports in his online article, “Palast charged with journalism in the first degree,” that he and Pascarella were doing a post-Katrina documentary for LinkTV and Democracy
Now!, and, as part of that, shot footage of a stinky Exxon Oil refinery located adjacent to a trailer park encampment of Katrina evacuees. Palast writes that
these charges have nothing to do with Osama or al-Qaeda, and have everything to do with obstructing news reports.

The National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA) announced on May 26 that the 700-ton conventional bomb detonation (known as the “bunker buster”) originally set to explode on June 2 in Nevada, has been delayed, though for how long is unclear. 100 workers contaminated at Prairie Island nuclear plant
Thursday 11 May @ 12:59:29 (Read: 3692)
In case you missed it...Hidden deep in the web pages of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission can be found the Current Morning Report for May 5, 2006. Within the brief one page missive, the NRC says, “Approximately 100 workers present in the Containment Building were externally contaminated and had small intakes of radioactive material composed principally of radioiodines.” The steam generators were not properly vented during work procedures that included, “removal of the generator man-ways in preparation for nozzle dam installation.” As a result of the error, gaseous contaminants within the steam generators were exhausted directly into the Containment Building atmosphere. According to the brief report, “Workers were decontaminated to remove external contamination prior to being released from the plant.” Xcel Energy Inc. shut down its 535-megawatt Prairie Island 1 nuclear reactor on April 28 for refueling and maintenance work. ||

Rove testifies for fifth time for grand jury
Wednesday 03 May @ 15:30:23 (Read: 3675)
In case you missed it...White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove testified before a federal grand jury for the fifth time on April 26, saying that he did not provide false statements in the CIA leak case. Rove testified for more than three hours, and left a federal courthouse unsure whether he would be indicted, according to a Bush aide.

Rove’s attorney, Robert Luskin, said in a statement, “[Prosecutor Patrick] Fitzgerald has affirmed that he has made no decision concerning charges.” A spokesman for Fitzgerald declined to comment on the case.

The leak investigation, otherwise known as Plamegate, began after administration officials were accused of disclosing Valerie Plame’s identity as a CIA operative. ||

In Case You Missed It: Sore losers
Thursday 09 March @ 15:35:19 (Read: 2038)
In case you missed it...Talk about sore losers. Hizzonner, the mayor of St. Paul, Chris Coleman, went to a birthday party at Mancini's Bar last week and he got a hot reception from some of St. Paul's bar owners. They tried to intimidate him by flashing cigarette lighters in his face. Someone approached with a glass of water. It’s not clear if they threw the water at the mayor or if they were just approaching him with trouble on their mind, but the mayor’s security intervened and calmed them down. The bar owners are upset about the mayor signing a smoking ban in St. Paul bars to match the ban in Minneapolis. They’re pushing for a referendum to try to rescind the ban, but it's hard to see how that bad attitude is going to win friends and influence voters. ||

Experts are frightened by a mass die-off of life along the Pacific Coast this year: plummeting fish populations, lots of dead birds on the beaches—and perhaps most worrisome, very little plankton, the tiny organisms that are a vital link in the ocean food chain.

“The bottom has fallen out of the coastal food chain, and there’s just not enough food out there,” said Julia Parrish, an ecologist at the University of Washington in Seattle.
